"In The Shadow" is a teen murder mystery that moves along at a good pace. The plot flows smoothly with plenty of twists and turns, and the characters are realistic and well defined. While emotions run deep, the story never becomes bogged down or sidetracked in trivialities.
Freddy Walker thinks he knows all there is to know about his long-time friend and neighbour, Sloan. When she is murdered, Freddy's search for the murderer reveals more than he wants to know about Sloan's dark secrets.
As Freddy uncovers a different image of Sloan, our impressions of Freddy change as well. It is a satisfying journey of self-discovery.
In the Shadow is a fantastic murder-mystery novel which takes on a particularly different route to show readers what's going on, unlike many others.
The novel is an exploration into the mind of the protagonist, Freddy Walker, as he uncovers the truth of what happened, all while struggling with his own emotions and memories. In a way, it's a heartfelt memoir from beginning to end, not without its share of darker moments, but ultimately highlighting her, Sloan, as a person.
As he searches for answers, Freddy finds himself stumped, more than once, by uncooperative, uncaring, or otherwise uninterested people directly related to Sloan, and it is their inaction what causes him to take action and solve the mystery.
At its best, this novel is about overcoming one's limitations and fears for the people one loves. It's a journey of discovery with a satisfying conclusion.
